Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!!

This was a year that was filled with change and adjustment...I was not able to keep up with my blog like I wanted to however my goal for next year is to incorporate this blog into what I do at work...I will be spending a few days of my holiday time to outline the articles and set them up for publishing...I just completed a series on Backwards Design at one of my schools so that will be one of the post...
Here's to the New Year!

Getting My Feet Wet

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my new job. Even though there is still some juggling going on as to what I will be doing exactly the things I have been doing have been rewarding...
The district that I work embarked on a journey about three years ago of using Title 1 funds to streamline instructional facilitators/coaches/ and specialist into one cohesive entity. We were then called Staff Development Teachers. Schools were divided into categories of need...This year Title 1 cut their budget by 10% so some schools became non-designated. At this time there are 21 non-designated schools and there have been 5.5 Staff Development teachers assigned to assist these schools of which I am one. Our job will be to define and refine the job of the staff development teacher while meeting the needs of these schools.

The Fab Five

The Fab Five 8/3/13

Cheryl's Classroom Tips Cheryl has an awesome blog. I have been privileged to attend several of her presentations at the SDE Differentiated Instruction Conference.

ClassDojo is a classroom tool that helps teachers improve behavior in their classrooms quickly and easily. It also captures and generates data on behavior that teachers can share with parents and administrators

Through MasteryConnect’s patent-pending MasteryTracker, teachers can effectively assess core standards, monitor student performance, and report student mastery to parents and administrators. Common Core Standards is an app by Mastery Connect.

Edmodo helps connect all learners with the people and resources needed to reach their full potential.

Doug Lemov's highly influential first book, Teach Like a Champion, is based on his study of top teachers in high-poverty public schools.

Its a New Dawn...It's a New Day Update...

I received the phone call yesterday, I will be the lead staff development teacher for my IDL pattern, which includes my current school. I am off to a new adventure in education...
As I am hoping to chronicle these adventures on this blog I am thinking of changing the name to Being a Teacher Leader...or something along those lines...we'll see...
One thing I will be adding is the Weekly Five...The Weekly Five will compile the five best ideas or strategies that I come across (in my opinion) for the week. That could be a book, a speaker, or an app.
Looking forward to this school year...

It's a New Dawn, It's a New Day

I have worked as a staff development teacher for the last two years at Academy Central,  this year I will be moving up to the district level...as excited as I am to begin this new adventure it is also bittersweet...in the last year I had developed a good working relationship with the staff and principal...and even though I would have been working with a new principal this year there was a feeling of success...However in this new adventure I will be sharing and helping to develop teachers all across the district which with  the implementation there will be a lot of work to do...

School Improvement Innovation Summit

School Improvement Innovation Summit
July 8-9, 2013
The Little America Hotel
Salt Lake City, UT

I am excited for the opportunity to participate in this summit...Our district will be implementing PD360 this year...It seems to be an effective way to deliver effective professional development to teachers and staff that is differentiated and aligned to the individual needs of the teacher.
There are two sessions that I especially want to attend :

Only the Best: Success for Every Student and Teacher
Tammy Davis, Principal, Central Elementary, Artesia, New Mexico. She will be sharing the strategies that her school uses to have every student on grade-level by second-grade, and far advanced by the time they leave...

Effective Online PD: The Key to Professional Learning
Sonja Alexander and Aleigha Henderson-Rosser, from the Learning Centric will be talking about how DeKalb County Schools in Atlanta, Georgia created powerful online professional development that serves the individual and collective needs of all the system's educators.

State Testing

April is here and we are entering the most hectic time for students and teachers...state testing... 5th graders started with writing today and tomorrow...next week begins testing for 3rd through 6th graders... While I understand the need for testing I can not understand the undue pressure that is exacted on teachers and unconconciously passed on to students...Is there a way that testing can be done without the underlying threats...something to think about...

Common Core for Teachers and Parents

Here is a short video that really explains the "gist" of Common Core. It was developed primarily for parents but it is a rally good overview and explaination for teachers also.

Here is another video that is a little more in depth on the subject of Common Core

From the Page to the Classroom: Implementing the Common Core State Standards - English Language Arts and Literacy from CGCS Video Maker on Vimeo.

Increasing Reading Comprehension Through Differentiated Instruction

Went to a workshop on Friday that featured Dr. Linda Gambrell from Scholastic. Dr. Gambrell presented several innovative ways to introduce a story to students. Really liked what she had to say.

National ASCD Conference

UPDATE: Well this trip did not happen due to a snafu at the central office. Was very dissappointed and a little irritated, however it taught me to check for myself (even if it means that the people who are supposed to be checking get irritated)... The good news is that in compensation we will be attending the SDE Differentiated Instruction conference in Las Vegas. Headed to the windy city of Chicago for the annual ASCD Conference. I am excited to see Maya Angelou.
